Critique this “recovery”

A lot of things going on here the least of which is suspect aftermarket gear… What do you think of this?

This one is all over the internets right now. Quite a bit to unpack but he is lucky to be alive.
 
I'm glad to hear him acknowledge the (false) sense of urgency. Bad gear is bad gear, but it seems like so many of these incidents seem to come from rushing.

Best piece of recovery advice I ever got, like my first recovery class, was to think about every recovery operation in terms of how many cups of tea it was going to take. Small problem? One cup of tea. Really stuck? Maybe 3-4 cups. Just getting past the idea that recoveries need to be quick quick - that helped me a lot.
